UK and US unions join and 'go global'

Unions from the UK and US are set to merge and create a new global body, the BBC has reported. Unite, the UK's largest union, will join with United Steelworkers and create a new organisation of three million members. Derek Simpson, joint general secretary of Unite, said the move was a response to the globalisation of business. "The political and economic power of multinational companies is formidable," he told the BBC. 'With this agreement we can finally begin the process of closing that gap." Britain recently felt the force of industrial action, which disrupted fuel supplies for several days and followed tanker drivers' demands for increased pay. Thousands if not millions of UK jobs rely on reliable fuel deliveries. The drivers' actions caused considerable worry across the country and sparked some panic buying, it was reported. During the action the Petrol Retailers Association advised: "As long as people are not told not to panic, then they will be fine."
