Local Areas: 75% want focus on unemployment

The government has revealed 75 per cent of local areas want their council to concentrate on getting young people into work. It has reduced the number of local targets - called Local Area Agreements - and hopes that regional policy makers concentrate on what matters most to their area. Gordon Brown has claimed the new approach will "drive up standards, respond to local concerns, and help people hold their local council to account". The top ten priorities included tackling crime, reducing teenage pregnancy and generating affordable homes. "These new local priorities mean that councils and their partners can concentrate their efforts on the specific needs of the local people they serve," said Hazel Blears, secretary of state for communities and local government. According to the local priorities website, Bradford, Brighton and Hove and Lambeth have targeted the achievement of a Level 2 qualification by the age of 19 as a top priority.
