CIPD: Unemployment predictions are 'somewhat pessimistic'

The Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) has claimed recent predictions of massive job cuts are "somewhat pessimistic". Its public policy advisor, Gerwyn Davies, has questioned claims that half a million jobs would be lost in the next two years. He told Personnel Today: "We believe employment levels are likely to rise, but at a much slower rate than over the past decade." Mr Davies explained that many firms have adopted a 'wait-and-see' policy. He acknowledged there was a possibility, if the economy failed to improve, that jobs could go. National Statistics has revealed the trend in the unemployment rate is increasing and that 38,000 more people are unemployed compared to January. Mr Davies said the "jobs boom decade has come to an abrupt halt" and jobs in human resources were no more or less safe than any others.
