MPs have called for health and safety regulations to be taught in schools. The politicians hope by giving children workplace guidance they will reduce the number of young people injured when they start work. According to Labour MP, Michael Clapham, in the past decade 64 employees under 19 have been killed in workplace accidents. "These figures are a shocking indictment of some employers' attitudes to their workers - an attitude that isn't acceptable in the 21st century," he said He is pushing the government to introduce the training and make it compulsory, he added: "I want to see what [the government] can do to help prevent further loss of young lives when they enter the workplace." The Institute of Occupational Health and Safety has a Workplace Hazard Awareness Course designed for younger people and a Wiseup2work website.
