Firms 'named and shamed' under immigration law

More than 265 firms have been 'named and shamed' for flouting new immigration laws. The Home Office published the details of 35 companies on its website and charged offending firms £2.35 million. Laura Mitchell, associate lawyer, writing on employment website, HRZone.co.uk, urged employers to take responsibility and check where their workers came from. "Tackling illegal working and taking strong action against employers who use illegal labour has never been higher on the government's agenda," she noted. The new legislation hopes to stop the exploitation of migrants who may receive poor pay, while their employers gain unfair advantage on competitors. Firms who knowingly employ illegal workers face both criminal and civil penalties – these include a maximum fine of £10,000 per employee and a possible jail sentence. "London's health and transport systems alone would collapse without the services of migrant workers," Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesperson, Nick Clegg, said previously.
