Unison threatens strike action

Unison members have decided to strike, a move that could bring the total number of public sector workers who have chosen to down tools to 600,000. Two further unions, the Public and Commercial Services Union and Prospect have begun industrial action and Scottish council workers could follow suit, the Guardian has reported. "They are fed up and angry that they are expected to accept pay cut after pay cut, while bread and butter prices go through the roof," claimed Dave Prentis, Unison's general secretary. "Most of them are low-paid workers, who are hit hardest by food and fuel price hikes, and they see the unfairness of boardroom bonanzas and big City bonuses." Chancellor Alistair Darling has called for companies to be prudent with their pay deals. He told the BBC: "Pay awards in both the private and public sector have to be consistent with our inflation target, which is two per cent."
