A new database, the National Staff Dismissal Register (NSDR), created by retailers to monitor their recruits, is expected to launch this month, it has been reported. The initiative was started by Action Against Business Crime (AABC) and keeps records of any employees who "have been dismissed or have left employment whilst under investigation for acts of dishonesty". It claims the register will allow "cost saving through reduction in losses, and a more efficient recruitment process". AABC chief executive, Mike Schuck, told the Times: "This isn't meant to target someone stealing £5, but those stealing thousands over a period of time. We are trying to police our own industry." Harrods, HMV, Mothercare & Selfridges are among several firms to sign-up to the register, despite concerns from employment unions. The Trades Union Congress' policy officer, Hannah Reid, said it is seriously concerned the database could lead to "people being shut out from the job market by an employer who falsely accuses them of misconduct or sacks them because they bear them a grudge," the BBC has reported.
