Employers told: Do the right thing

Employers have been told they need to implement policies which prevent discrimination in the workplace. The Employment Lawyers Association has urged firms to introduce rulings, train staff in their application and apply their policies to recruitment and promotion schemes. "It's a combination of the desire by good employers to do the right thing backed by the possibility of costly litigation which is likely to improve the position for women in the work place," said Richard Linskell, secretary. He advised workers be trained as to what they can and cannot do and employers adopt proper job and person specifications when appointing personalities. "From an employee's perspective, where they feel they have been a victim of discrimination they have to raise that issue with the company through a written grievance and, if necessary, they will need to pursue tribunal proceedings to enforce that right," he said. The equality and human rights commission was established under the Equality Act 2006 and works to eliminate discrimination, reduce inequality, protect human rights and build good relations.
